Stenly / Legal
A plain-language summary, not legal advice. This page explains in everyday words how Stenly works and what we expect of each other. A lawyer has not reviewed it.
Terms of sale and use
Last updated 2 November 2026
These terms cover the Stenly app, the Stenly command-line tools, this website (stenly.ai) and the default share service (share.stenly.ai). Stenly is made by William Bunting ("we"). By buying a licence, activating one, or using the signed Stenly app or the share service, you agree to them. If you only read the source code or build it yourself, the MIT licence below is what applies to you. See also our privacy policy.
Two ways to get Stenly
Build it yourself, free. Stenly's source code is published under the MIT licence. You may use, copy, change and share it under that licence. A build you make yourself has no trial, no licence key and no limits.
The signed macOS app, $10 once. The official download is signed and notarized by us so that macOS opens it without warnings. It includes 10 free meetings, then needs a paid licence to start new recordings. The rest of this page is mostly about that app.
The licence for the signed app
- Price. A one-time payment of $10 (taxes may be added at checkout). There is no subscription. We may charge a different price to future buyers. That will not change what you have already paid for.
- One Mac, with room to move. A licence works on one Mac at a time. Each key can be activated on up to 3 Macs, so you can replace or add a computer. To move it, choose Deactivate in Settings → Licence on the old Mac, then activate on the new one. If you can no longer reach the old Mac, contact us.
- Updates included. Updates to the app are included in the one-time price. We do not promise a release schedule or how long we will keep publishing updates.
- Free meetings. The first 10 meetings are free. A recording shorter than a minute does not count as a meeting. After that, new recordings need a licence. Notes, search, sharing, MCP and dictation keep working, and nothing you made is hidden or deleted.
- How the check works. Stenly confirms your key with Polar when you activate it and about once a week when you are online, and it keeps working offline for 30 days. If Polar says a key is no longer valid (for example it was refunded), new recordings pause until you use a valid one.
- Your key is yours. Keep it private and do not publish or resell it. Keys that are shared widely may be turned off.
Payment and refunds
Payment goes through Polar, the merchant of record for the sale. Polar takes your payment, collects and pays any sales tax or VAT, sends your receipt, and holds your billing details under its own terms and privacy policy. Refund requests are handled through Polar, using the receipt email or Polar's support. This page does not take away any refund, cancellation or consumer right you have under the law where you live. We have not set a separate refund window here.
Recording other people
Stenly records audio from your microphone and from the audio playing on your Mac. No bot joins the call, but you still need to tell people. You are responsible for telling everyone you record, and for getting any consent that the laws where you and they are require. Stenly does not post a recording notice and cannot check that anyone consented. If anyone objects, do not record. Do not use Stenly to record anyone in a way that is against the law or against someone's rights.
Please also be careful with what you share. A share link opens for anyone who has the full link, and a note you send to Notion, Slack or a webhook is subject to the rules of those services and of the people in the meeting.
Services you connect
Stenly can work with outside services if you turn them on: AI providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, Google Calendar, Notion, Slack, webhooks, and a share server. Your use of them is covered by your own agreement with each one. We are not responsible for what they do or for their availability. The privacy policy lists what each service receives.
The share service
share.stenly.ai is a free, best-effort service. Notes are end-to-end encrypted, so we cannot read them or check what they contain. Do not use it to store or spread anything unlawful, and do not try to overload it. It limits how often you can upload. Shares expire (90 days by default) and we may remove a share, block abuse, or change or stop the service. Keep your own copy of anything you need. You can run your own share server from the source.
Accuracy
Transcripts and AI summaries can be wrong: they can mishear a name, miss a point or invent a detail. Check anything important before you act on it.
No warranty
Stenly is provided "as is", without any promise that it will work for your purpose, be error-free, or always be available. We are not liable for lost recordings, notes or data, for missed meetings, or for indirect or consequential losses. This applies as far as the law allows. Nothing here limits any right you have that cannot be limited by law.
Third-party software
Stenly includes and downloads software and models from others (for example the speech models). Those keep their own licences, which the MIT licence above does not replace.
Changes
We may change these terms. We will change the "last updated" date, and the changes apply from then. If a change affects a licence you have already bought in a way you would reasonably object to, contact us.
